the KAEI Answered Here

Everything you need to know about joining, earning CEUs, and getting the most out of your membership.

About Membership

I'm a contractor, not an inspector. Is this still worth it for me?

Absolutely.

Day 1 of each event is specifically geared toward Master Electricians and contractors.

You'll learn the code updates that affect your installs, get clarity on gray-area scenarios, and build relationships with the inspectors who'll be reviewing your work.

Plus, when you've got a question on a job site, you'll have a network of 150+ pros you can call.

Do I have to be licensed in Kentucky to join?

Not technically — but KAEI's training is focused on Kentucky code adoption and the real-world scenarios Kentucky pros face.

We do have members from neighboring states (like "Indiana Guy," who drives two hours each way), but the content is built for Kentucky electrical professionals.

How do I join KAEI?

No paperwork maze. No approval process. Just a quick, easy, secure filling out the online form (with secure payment included) and you're in.

Want to talk anything over first? Just get in touch. Dennis will be more than glad to answer anything on your mind. Send him a message

How much does membership cost?

$100 per year.

That gets you access to both statewide training events (February in Louisville, August in Lexington), all the CEUs you earn at those events, expert panels, code training, and a network of 150+ electrical pros across Kentucky.

No hidden fees. No upsells. No surprises.

When does membership renew?

Annually.

We'll reach out toward the end of your membership year to renew or simply re-submit the same form. You can book the event you'd like to attend in the same step for another year of training and access.

Who Can Join? Who is KAEI membership for?

Electrical inspectors who need CEUs and want to stay sharp on code changes

Master Electricians and contractors who are tired of failing inspections due to code updates they didn't know about

General electricians who take their craft seriously and want to keep learning

If you're doing electrical work in Kentucky and you care about doing it right, KAEI is for you.

About the Events

When and where are the meetings?

We meet twice a year:

Early February in Louisville – Two-day event (Day 1 for electricians/contractors, Day 2 for inspectors)
Mid-August in Lexington – Same structure
Exact dates are announced a few months in advance and posted on the Events page.

Do I have to attend both events?

Nope.

Your $100 membership gets you access to both, but you can attend whichever fits your schedule.

That said, most members attend both — because the training is worth it and the network gets stronger the more you show up.

Can I attend just one day of an event?

Yes.

Day 1 is geared toward Master Electricians and contractors (6 CEU hours).

Day 2 is built for inspectors (8 CEU hours).

Attend the day that fits your role, or attend both if you want the full experience.

What if I'm not a member — can I still attend an event?

[Insert policy here — e.g., "Non-members can attend for a day-pass fee of $X.  But if you're planning to come to more than one event, membership is the better deal."]

About CEUs

How many CEUs can I earn at each event?

Day 1 (Master Electricians & Contractors): 6 CEU hours
Day 2 (Inspectors): 8 CEU hours
Attend both events in a year and you'll earn up to 14 CEU hours total.

Do KAEI CEUs count toward my Kentucky license renewal?

Yes.

Every event earns you continuing education credits that count toward your Kentucky license renewal.

No extra paperwork. No separate registration. Just show up, participate, and we'll document your hours.

How do Kentucky CEU requirements work?

Master Electricians (MEs) and general electricians: Must earn 6 CEU hours annually to renew.

Electrical Inspectors: Must earn 12 CEU hours annually to maintain certification.

KAEI's two events can cover a big chunk (or all) of your annual requirement — depending on which days you attend.

What if I need more CEUs beyond what KAEI offers?

KAEI gets you most of the way there, but if you need additional hours, you can:

Attend other approved training providers (Electrical Clearing House, NECA, IBEW, online providers)
Check with the Kentucky Board of Licensure for Electricians for a full list of approved courses
We'll also share CEU opportunities in our quarterly newsletter, The Code Corner.

About the Training

What kind of training do you offer?

Real-world, code-focused training led by Dennis Steier and guest experts.

Every event includes:

NEC updates and Kentucky-specific code adoptions

Expert panels (engineers, seasoned inspectors, manufacturers)

Scenario-based discussions — the installs you're actually seeing, the calls you're actually making

Hands-on product demos from major manufacturers (Square D, Eaton, Leviton, etc.)

No fluff. No sales pitches. Just the knowledge you need to do your job better.

Who teaches the sessions?

Dennis Steier — a 30+ year veteran of electrical inspection, former IAEI chapter president, and Kentucky code expert — leads every meeting.

He also brings in guest experts who know their stuff and actually answer your questions.

Is this just a lecture, or can I ask questions?

You can (and should—and are encouraged to) ask questions.

KAEI meetings are a conversation, not a lecture. If you've got a tricky install, a gray-area scenario, or a question the code book doesn't answer clearly — bring it up.

That's what we're here for.

Whs?

KAEI gets yorner.
